Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute announced it has received the Healthgrades Five-Star Award, the highest award offered, for procedures in cardiac, orthopedic, maternity, and gynecologic surgery service lines. This achievement is part of new findings and data released on October 23, 2018 by Healthgrades and is featured in the company’s 2018 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*
“Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute has a long track record of providing outstanding healthcare services on the Treasure Coast. Ensuring patients are not only receiving high-quality care and specialized services, but that services are administered in the safest possible manner is one of our greatest priorities,” said Eric Goldman, Chief Executive Officer at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. “Being the area’s only Level II Trauma Center, Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit means we are responsible for caring for the most vulnerable patients in their time of need. Receiving these awards, and especially to be named among the Top 5% in the Nation for Patient Safety in 2018, further validates our commitment to the communities we serve.”
A five-star rating indicates that Lawnwood’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated. Brad Bowmen, MD and Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades explains, “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving high-quality outcomes is fundamental. Because consumers place such value on this information, hospitals that achieve five stars for procedures/conditions stand out in their marketplace.”
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
