Lawnwood Regional Medical Center and Heart Institute expands services to patients in the Treasure Coast by offering electrophysiology tests in new state-of-the-art Cath Lab
Lawnwood now conducts electrophysiology studies on patients in the new state-of-the-art catheterization lab also known as a cardiac cath lab. Doctors can create a 3D model of the patient's heart that allows them to make a road map of the electrical activity of the heart to find the location of an abnormal heartbeat. These results help doctors decide whether a patient needs medicine, a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, cardiac ablation or surgery.
Many of the patients that undergo this particular study have a condition called atrial fibrillation (A-fib). According to the CDC, more than two million people in the United States have A-fib. With the aging of the U.S. population, this number is expected to increase.
Lawnwood's cardiac cath lab, is where cardiac catheterization and other procedures are performed to diagnose and treat heart conditions. Cath lab teams are comprised of highly skilled and specially trained cardiologists, radiologists and registered nurses. In the hybrid cath lab, which also functions as an OR, doctors can perform procedures like implants, pacemakers, TAVRs (transcatheter aortic valve replacement) as well as heart surgeries in emergency situations.
